Our Montessori preschool in Davie provides a nurturing Montessori environment for children aged 3 – 6, where hands-on learning, movement, and mixed-age classrooms encourage order, coordination, concentration, and independence.
Building respectful relationships and social confidence Grace and courtesy lessons are very important at this stage of a child’s development, as children are learning how to function in a social environment. They learn to respect the rights and property of others, resolve conflict appropriately, communicate freely with peers, and initiate interaction with others. They also develop social grace and manners, learn to express feelings verbally, and build the ability to relate well with both peers and adults.
Nurturing independence, self-esteem, and adaptability These years support the growth of children’s independence, self-esteem, and self-discipline while also introducing the basics of academics. Children learn to accept new situations, develop a positive attitude, welcome and adapt to changes, and cooperate with others in a supportive environment.
Strengthening concentration, responsibility, and self-directionChildren develop the ability to initiate their own work, welcome new challenges, improve memory retention, and strengthen decision-making skills. They learn to work without disturbing others, exhibit self-control, handle stressful situations, and build a positive self-image and self-confidence. This area also supports independence and self-direction, inner maturation, respect for materials, careful observation, increased attention span, and the ability to choose work thoughtfully. As they progress, children express joy in discovery, demonstrate good concentration, persist at tasks, and complete the full work cycle.
Gaining independence through meaningful everyday activities In Practical Life, children learn real-world skills, including care of the environment, such as watering plants; care of self, such as tying shoelaces; and care of others, such as serving snacks. Through these activities, they develop control of movement, learn to recognize and respond to orderliness, and gain the ability to care independently for themselves and their environment. They also improve eye-hand coordination, use manipulative materials correctly, support both large and small muscle growth, and experience rhythmical movement with music.
Organizing the world through the senses In our Montessori preschool in Davie, sensorial experiences help children organize and understand their environment through the use of their senses. For example, they may sort sounds into categories such as loud or soft. They develop visual discrimination, auditory discrimination, tactile discrimination, olfactory discrimination, and gustatory discrimination. The Montessori environment also allows teachers to provide one-on-one assistance as children refine these skills.
Developing awareness of self, space, and the wider world Children are introduced to maps, the calendar, clocks, and the concepts of right and left. They explore the geography of the body by learning left and right, and they study the globe, land and water forms, oceans, the United States, foreign maps, and direction. They also learn the days of the week, build awareness of self and others, and develop an understanding of the calendar as part of their growing sense of place and time.
Building strong foundations for reading, writing, and expressionChildren learn the phonetic sounds connected to letter symbols so they can later group letters together, make words, and read. Language development includes nomenclature, expression of thought, interest in books and stories, rhyming, and the phonetic alphabet and sounds. Learners also work on readiness skills, vowels, group discussion, sequencing, correct pronunciation, matching, initial and final consonants, opposites, and reading words, sentences, phonograms, and beginning reader books. Writing development includes pencil grip, control of pencil, forming letters correctly, writing first and last name, writing phonetic words, and eventually writing sentences and stories.
Understanding quantity and operations through hands-on learningChildren learn that number symbols have quantitative meaning and discover in concrete ways what it means to add one group of something to another. They develop an understanding of quantity, recognize numerals 0–9, count objects to 9, and begin teen work. As they advance, they explore linear counting to 100 and 1000, skip counting, odd and even numbers, fractions, money, exchanging, and decimal system work with an understanding of place value. They are also introduced to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Encouraging curiosity about nature, life, and the physical worldChildren learn about the care and nurturing of animals and plants while exploring both living and nonliving things. Their science experiences include nutrition and food groups, magnets, rocks and minerals, weather and atmosphere, animals and zoology, health, and the classification of vertebrates into five classes as well as invertebrates. They also study plants and botany, the solar system, experiments, seashells, earth science, and the three forms of water.

English is developed through consistent, purposeful interaction with Montessori-trained guides, who support children in linking words to objects, actions, and real experiences. This gentle immersion strengthens understanding, vocabulary, and self-expression while allowing each child to progress at an individual pace. From Early Childhood, children are also introduced to Spanish, expanding their exposure to another language from an early age. Watching my daughter Julia grow in the Hummingbirds classroom has been truly inspiring. As a Kindergartener, she has begun reading, developing mathematical understanding through hands-on learning, exploring the world around her, and building valuable social skills with confidence and independence.
Joanna Kopicki, Teacher and Parent
As both a Montessori teacher and a Montessori mother, I have the unique privilege of experiencing this philosophy from two deeply meaningful perspectives. Teaching Lower Elementary students is truly a passion of mine, and there is nothing more rewarding than watching children develop confidence, independence, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning. At the same time, witnessing my daughter Julia’s journey in the Hummingbirds classroom, as a Kindergartener, has been equally inspiring. Watching her begin to read, build mathematical understanding through hands-on materials, explore the continents and oceans of the world, and learn how to peacefully resolve peer conflicts has been incredible to witness as a parent. Montessori education nurtures the whole child academically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually in a way that is both purposeful and beautiful. Seeing the growth of my students in the classroom while also watching my own child flourish within the Montessori environment continually reaffirms why I believe so deeply in this method of education.
