Our journalism program

Journalism gives students the opportunity to grow as writers, thinkers, and leaders. As they report, write, edit, and publish, they build real-world skills while developing confidence, responsibility, and a stronger sense of purpose.

The power of choice

Students are encouraged to follow their curiosity, pursue the stories that interest them most, and explore issues that feel relevant to their lives and community. This sense of ownership deepens engagement and helps students see learning as something personal and meaningful.

The power of choice

Learning by doing

Journalism is a hands-on process. Students conduct research, interview sources, write drafts, revise their work, and shape stories for publication. Along the way, they strengthen their communication skills, refine their voice, and gain confidence through authentic experience.

Learning by doing

Character, conscience, and care

Through storytelling, students learn to listen closely, represent others fairly, and approach different perspectives with empathy and respect. They begin to understand that journalism is not only about sharing information, but also about doing so with integrity and thoughtfulness.

Character, conscience, and care

Seeing their impact

When students see their work published and shared with others, they experience the power of their own voice. They begin to understand that their ideas can inform, connect, and inspire - an experience that builds both confidence and a lasting sense of responsibility.

Seeing their impact

Finding voice through Journalism

At Summit-Questa, journalism is a powerful expression of Montessori learning in action. Through The SQMS Press, students write, edit, and publish meaningful stories while developing confidence, purpose, and responsibility.

Rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori’s concept of valorization, the program helps students discover that their voice has value - and that it can make an impact beyond the classroom.

Student voice with purpose

Students explore the stories, issues, and ideas that matter to them, learning how to communicate clearly, thoughtfully, and with intention for a real audience.

Authentic, real-world learning

Working alongside a professional journalist and benefiting from opportunities such as Summit-Questa’s partnership with Nova Southeastern University, students gain hands-on experience in reporting, writing, editing, and publishing.

Responsibility, empathy, and integrity

As learners tell stories and represent different perspectives, students learn to approach journalism with care, respect, and a strong sense of ethical responsibility.

Confidence that leads to impact

When students see their work published, and recognized through state and national awards - they begin to understand the power of their ideas, their effort, and their ability to influence the world around them.

Jack Gillin

Going to Questa helped me find my independence and authentic writing voice.

The constant engagement and connection throughout all my classes made me a stronger student. I’m grateful that Questa encourages self-expression. It’s wonderful to see students finding themselves through creative projects.

Daniel Harper

I think the biggest thing I took away from Questa was the interests I sparked there and clung onto in high school.

From our journalism class, I gained a realization about my passion for writing and reporting. Today, I’m still writing for my high school newspaper.
