In Lower Elementary, students are supported through a strong partnership between school and home, with families receiving three progress reports each year, a weekly electronic newsletter, parent-teacher conferences, and open communication via WhatsApp. Academic achievement is understood as more than what students know; it also reflects how they grow in independence, responsibility, and confidence. In the Montessori environment, each child moves at an individualized pace, building understanding, strengthening work habits, and taking increasing ownership of learning. Progress is also honored through the Bridging Ceremony, a meaningful tradition that marks the completion of one stage and the transition to the next, as students cross a wooden bridge to symbolize their learning journey and readiness for what comes next.
In Lower Elementary, the Montessori approach also nurtures the development of ISP life competencies through daily practice and real-life experiences. Students learn to respect the rights and property of others, resolve conflict appropriately, communicate freely with peers, initiate interactions, practice social grace and manners, express feelings verbally, and relate well to both peers and adults. These competencies are strengthened through the prepared environment and through hands-on activities such as day field trips, gardening, and food preparation, helping students grow socially, emotionally, and practically.
At Summit-Questa, language learning supports communication, cultural understanding, and a broader view of the world. The school welcomes families of all nationalities and languages, while helping students build strong English skills across reading, writing, grammar, discussion, and presentation. Spanish is offered from Early Childhood through Middle School, giving learners consistent exposure to an additional language as they grow. Language development is monitored through assessments and grades, supporting steady progress over time.
At Summit-Questa, international opportunities broaden perspectives, deepen cultural understanding, and connect learning to the wider world. In Elementary, cultural awareness grows through Montessori exploration and field trips linked to science, history, and nature, while older students can take part in experiences such as Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN), representing countries and presenting solutions to global issues. As part of the ISP network, ILOS (International Learning Opportunities for Students) also connects learners with peers around the world through shared projects and global experiences, including ISP Artists, ISP Changemakers, ISP Scientists, ISP Chess Masters, and ISP Virtual Exchange.
As both a Montessori teacher and a Montessori mother, I have the unique privilege of experiencing this philosophy from two deeply meaningful perspectives. Teaching Lower Elementary students is truly a passion of mine, and there is nothing more rewarding than watching children develop confidence, independence, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning.
Joanna Kopicki, Teacher and Parent
As both a Montessori teacher and a Montessori mother, I have the unique privilege of experiencing this philosophy from two deeply meaningful perspectives. Teaching Lower Elementary students is truly a passion of mine, and there is nothing more rewarding than watching children develop confidence, independence, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning. At the same time, witnessing my daughter Julia’s journey in the Hummingbirds classroom, as a Kindergartener, has been equally inspiring. Watching her begin to read, build mathematical understanding through hands-on materials, explore the continents and oceans of the world, and learn how to peacefully resolve peer conflicts has been incredible to witness as a parent. Montessori education nurtures the whole child academically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually in a way that is both purposeful and beautiful. Seeing the growth of my students in the classroom while also watching my own child flourish within the Montessori environment continually reaffirms why I believe so deeply in this method of education.
