How we learn

Our learning approach

At Summit-Questa Montessori School, how children learn matters as much as what they learn. Guided by Dr. Maria Montessori’s belief that “the child is both a hope and a promise for mankind,” our approach fosters independence, curiosity, and joyful discovery in a community rooted in respect for one another and for nature.

From caring for the environment to developing voice and confidence through meaningful work, students grow into compassionate, capable learners - a journey reflected in honors including the Distinguished Educator of the Year Award, state and national journalism awards, and Pinnacle Awards.

The Montessori method

Montessori is a child-centered philosophy, and at Summit-Questa Montessori School, a leading Montessori method school in Davie, this approach is rooted in the belief that children learn best in a social environment that supports their unique development. Here, students grow with confidence, independence, curiosity, creativity, and a deep sense of purpose.

Dynamic principles

Montessori begins with a simple but powerful belief: every child learns best when respected as an individual. Dr. Maria Montessori developed her method through scientific observation, recognizing that children thrive in environments that support independence, concentration, and purposeful activity.

Rather than treating children as passive learners, Montessori sees them as active participants in their own development. When given the right setting, they naturally explore, create, and build the foundations for lifelong learning.

Dynamic principles

Nature of learning

Montessori education is based on key developmental principles. Children are understood as unique individuals, different from adults and different from one another. They learn through purposeful activity, especially in the earliest years of life, when their minds are especially absorbent and responsive to the world around them.

This approach honors each child’s pace of development and creates space for natural curiosity, repetition, movement, and discovery. Learning becomes something children actively do, not something simply delivered to them.

Nature of learning

Focus on the whole child

Montessori is designed to support the full development of the child - socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively. At Summit-Questa Montessori School, a leading Montessori curriculum in Davie, academic growth matters, but it is only one part of a larger goal: helping each child become capable, balanced, self-aware, and engaged with the world.

At Summit-Questa Montessori School, children are encouraged to build confidence, empathy, self-discipline, and responsibility alongside academic understanding. This whole-child approach helps students develop both strong skills and strong character.

Focus on the whole child

A purposeful environment

A Montessori classroom is intentionally prepared to support independence and self-confidence. The environment, materials, and social atmosphere are carefully designed to match the child’s developmental needs and invite purposeful exploration.

Everything has a reason. Spaces are orderly, accessible, and calm. Children are able to move freely, choose meaningful work, and engage deeply with activities that help them develop concentration, coordination, and ownership of their learning.

A purposeful environment

Montessori materials and guide

Montessori learning is hands-on. Dr. Montessori created multi-sensory, self-correcting materials that help children build skills step by step and move from concrete experience to abstract understanding. These materials encourage repetition, independence, and genuine mastery.

The teacher plays a different role than in a traditional classroom. Rather than being the constant center of instruction, the Montessori teacher serves as a guide and observer - preparing the environment, introducing lessons thoughtfully, and supporting each child according to readiness and need.

Freedom, community, and growth

Montessori gives children freedom within clear limits, and at Summit-Questa Montessori School, an accredited Montessori school in Davie, students learn to make choices, manage responsibility, and respect both themselves and others. This balance helps develop independence, internal discipline, and a strong sense of accountability.

Multi-age classrooms further strengthen this experience by creating a family-like community where children learn from one another through leadership, collaboration, mentorship, and shared discovery. Over time, this environment nurtures adaptability, creativity, confidence, and the skills needed for lifelong success.

Curiosity fuels our learning

The best learning happens when students are actively engaged. We ignite curiosity through hands-on projects and inquiry-based learning, making learning exciting, memorable and full of exploration.

Confidence drives lifelong learning

Our students trust in their abilities, build confidence and lead their way forward. This mindset helps them believe they can learn and achieve anything, fostering a love for lifelong learning.

The power of 'Good Struggles'

We believe great learning happens just beyond the comfort zone. That’s why we create purposeful challenges, or 'good struggles', that help students stay motivated while they grow. Through these experiences, students build resilience, solve problems, and learn to keep going – even when it’s hard.

Teachers as co-pilots

Learning here is a partnership. Teachers work alongside students as guides, helping them navigate choices, embrace good struggles, inspire those 'aha' Amazing Learning moments of self-discovery and grow in confidence.

Measuring the quality of learning

We measure the quality of learning through International Schools Partnership’s Learning Improvement Process - LIP. This framework helps teachers and leaders reflect on what works and adapt quickly to meet each learner’s needs, ensuring every student feels ready to embrace good struggles and succeed.

Informed by evidence gathered through this process, our learning spaces continually evolve to spark curiosity, foster resilience and prepare students with the skills they need to thrive - not just in school, but in life. Every improvement is guided by what drives real progress for learners.

Summit Questa truly adheres to the traditional Montessori teachings.

This methodology fosters my child's natural curiosities and interests, while simulateously cultivating her autonomy and independence. I have had my daughter at Summit Questa Montessori since she was 3 years old, and I am very impressed and pleased with her progress as a now 8-year-old in second grade.

My experience at Questa helped me build confidence in my abilities and learn how to solve problems on my own, which has made high school way less intimidating than I’d imagined.

It has also helped me with balancing athletics and academics,
